The European Union Biodiversity Strategy is a comprehensive plan adopted by the European Commission to halt biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems within the EU. It is a key component of the European Green Deal, aiming to make the EU's economy sustainable. The strategy sets out a range of ambitious targets and actions to be achieved by 2030.

Central to the strategy are ambitious targets for protected areas. It aims to expand protected terrestrial and marine areas to cover at least 30% of the EU's land and sea, with a third of these strictly protected. This expansion is intended to safeguard critical habitats and species. Another significant objective is the restoration of degraded ecosystems. The strategy calls for legally binding targets to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, focusing on natural habitats and species currently in decline.

The strategy also addresses the drivers of biodiversity loss, including unsustainable land use, pollution, and climate change. It promotes nature-based solutions in urban planning, agriculture, and forestry, encouraging practices that enhance biodiversity. Furthermore, it emphasizes the integration of biodiversity considerations into all relevant EU policies and funding mechanisms. The strategy also seeks to strengthen the enforcement of existing environmental legislation, such as the Habitats and Birds Directives, and encourages greater public and private investment in biodiversity. It also aims to improve research and monitoring to better understand biodiversity trends and the effectiveness of conservation measures. The overarching goal is to ensure that nature is on a path to recovery by 2030, benefiting both the environment and human well-being.
