EPOtermelést is a Hungarian term that translates to "EPO production" or "EPO synthesis." It refers to the biological process by which the body, or artificial methods, create erythropoietin (EPO). Erythropoietin is a hormone that plays a crucial role in stimulating the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow.

Naturally, EPO is produced primarily by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood, a condition known as hypoxia. When the kidneys detect insufficient oxygen, they release EPO into the bloodstream. This hormone then travels to the bone marrow, where it binds to receptors on red blood cell precursors, signaling them to mature and multiply. This increases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.

In a medical context, EPO can also be synthesized artificially using recombinant DNA technology. This synthetic EPO is used as a therapeutic agent to treat various conditions characterized by anemia, such as chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy-induced anemia, and certain blood disorders. The production of this recombinant EPO involves cultivating genetically engineered cells that are programmed to produce the hormone. The generated EPO is then purified and formulated for medical use. Athletes have also been known to misuse synthetic EPO to enhance endurance by artificially increasing their red blood cell count, a practice that is banned by most sports organizations due to its performance-enhancing and health-risking nature.
