EPCISi

EPCISi is a proposed extension to the EPCIS standard intended to enhance the capture, representation, and sharing of event data across increasingly connected supply chains. Building on EPCIS, which records and communicates events related to products using the Electronic Product Code, EPCISi seeks to accommodate larger volumes of sensor data, richer context, and cross-domain interoperability while addressing privacy and governance concerns.

Key ideas behind EPCISi include a modular event model that can accommodate new data types, support for both real-time streaming and batch processing, standardized event schemas and identifiers, and improved querying and analytics capabilities. It also emphasizes robust access control, data minimization, and governance rules to manage who can see which data and under what conditions.

Architecture and interoperability considerations aim to keep EPCISi compatible with existing EPCIS deployments and GS1 standards. The approach envisions registries of event types, versioned schemas, and clear provenance information to enable traceability across partners. Data formats may include JSON, XML, or other encodings, with guidance on semantic interoperability to ensure consistent interpretation of events.

Status and adoption are currently conceptual rather than official. As of now, EPCISi has been discussed in academic and industry contexts as a potential direction to address scalability, privacy, and cross-domain data sharing. Widespread adoption depends on standardization efforts, pilot implementations, and governance agreements among supply chain stakeholders.
