ENstandard

ENstandard, or European standard, refers to standards developed within the European Standardization System. They are produced by the European standardization organizations CEN (European Committee for Standardization), CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). EN standards cover a wide range of areas including construction, manufacturing, safety, environmental management, healthcare, information technology, and telecommunications, and are intended to ensure interoperability, quality, and safe market operation across Europe.

Most EN standards are published as harmonized standards (short: HS) or as non-harmonized standards. Harmonized EN standards are referenced in EU directives and regulations; when a product or service complies with an HS, it can be presumed to conform to the corresponding EU directive, a basis for CE marking. Development occurs through technical committees and working groups comprised of national standards bodies, industry stakeholders, and experts, with formal vote and national adoption processes. Once adopted, EN standards may be adopted as national standards by member bodies, with or without national modification.

Some EN standards are identical to ISO standards but have been adopted for use in Europe; these are labeled EN ISO. The system also includes the Eurocode family, which comprises EN standards for structural design (e.g., EN 1990 Basis of structural design; EN 1991-1-4 Wind actions) and related parts. EN standards are voluntary unless transposed into law by member states or referenced by EU directives, yet they play a central role in conformity assessment, procurement, product labeling, and market access within the European Economic Area.
