ENStandardit

ENStandardit, commonly referred to as European standards, are a set of technical documents intended to ensure compatibility, safety, and interoperability within the European market. They are produced by three European standardization organizations: CEN (European Committee for Standardization), CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). The standards cover a wide range of sectors, including construction, information technology, machinery, energy, and telecommunications.

Standards are developed by national standard bodies that are members of the European organizations. Technical committees draft the content, which then undergo public enquiry and a voting process. Once approved, the documents are published as EN standards. When a standard is harmonized under EU directives, it carries a harmonized status and a reference in the Official Journal of the European Union. This harmonization provides a presumption of conformity with the corresponding directive, facilitating market access for products and services.

EN standards may be identical to international standards such as ISO or IEC, with adoption as EN standards through the European organizations. National standard bodies may withdraw conflicting national standards to avoid duplication and ensure consistency across member states.

Examples of EN standards include the Eurocodes for structural design (EN 1990 to EN 1999) and a wide range of product and system standards in electrical, mechanical, and information technologies. The European standardization system supports the internal market by facilitating trade, ensuring safety and performance, and providing a framework for conformity assessment and market surveillance.
