EMGnervezetés, often abbreviated as EMG, refers to the process of measuring and interpreting the electrical activity produced by muscles. This technique is a fundamental tool in neurophysiology and plays a crucial role in diagnosing and understanding various neuromuscular disorders. The electrical signals generated by muscle fibers during contraction are detected by electrodes placed on the skin or, in some cases, inserted directly into the muscle. These electrodes are connected to an electromyograph, an electronic instrument that amplifies and records the electrical signals.

The recorded signals, known as the electromyogram, can then be analyzed to assess the health and function of the nerves that control muscles and the muscles themselves. Abnormalities in the EMG pattern can indicate damage to peripheral nerves, nerve roots, or the muscles themselves. For example, certain patterns might suggest conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs, muscular dystrophy, or peripheral neuropathy.

EMG is often performed in conjunction with nerve conduction studies (NCS), which measure the speed and strength of electrical signals traveling along nerves. Together, EMG and NCS provide a comprehensive picture of neuromuscular function, helping clinicians pinpoint the location and severity of nerve and muscle problems. The procedure is generally safe, though some discomfort may be experienced during needle insertion for intramuscular EMG. The interpretation of EMG results requires specialized knowledge and is typically performed by neurologists or other trained medical professionals.
