EGPRS2

EGPRS2, short for Enhanced General Packet Radio Service Release 2, is a evolution of the EGPRS technology. EGPRS2 is a 2G/2.5G mobile telecommunication technology designed for packet-switched data services, enhanced by higher bit rates and more efficient use of radio resources.

The key improvements of EGPRS2 over EGPRS are the increased data rates and improved quality, both for packet-switched data and circuit-switched data. EGPRS2 offers higher air-link speed, allowing for faster data transfer. The technology also doubles the symbol rate, making it possible to achieve better quality and improved performance in environments with line-of-sight restrictions.

The major development entities behind EGPRS2 include the research and development work of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). EGPRS2 provides three data rates in a time slot, making it suitable for low bandwidth environments as it allows sharing of same resource with other users.

The operation of EGPRS2 relies on packet principle for transmission and reception. Each user is assigned a time slot at the start of each transmission frame and during transmission data packet containing information is transmitted in sequential bursts called slots. The technique effectively uses the radio resources by packaging more information into fewer slots.
