The EDTA is a brachyuran crab species native to the western Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the family Majidae, commonly known as spider crabs. The scientific name of the species is Eurynome aspera, although some taxonomists have also referred to it as Eurynome affinis stationis.

EDTA is a cosmopolitan species that can be found in a variety of habitats, including coral reefs and rocky shores. It is also a migratory species, with adults often found in shallow waters. When found in nearshore waters, it tends to inhabit sandy or gravel bottoms.

EDTA crabs are typically grayish-brown in color with darker spots or stripes. Their shells can grow up to 50-70 mm in width. The distribution of the species is influenced by a combination of factors, including ocean currents, temperature, and salinity. The species is an opportunistic feeder that consumes a wide range of invertebrates, including mollusks and echinoderms.

Some taxonomists have suggested that the species may be part of a complex of related species, and further research may be necessary to better understand its evolutionary relationships with other Eurynome species. Despite its ubiquity, the EDTA remains a poorly studied species, with more research needed to fully understand its ecology and biology.

From a human perspective, EDTA is considered an abundant species and is not typically targeted by commercial fisheries. Rather, it is often taken as a bycatch in crab fisheries targeting more valuable species. Nonetheless, it remains a critical component of marine ecosystems, playing an important role in nutrient cycling and energy transfer.
