ECluokitus

ECluokitus is a classification framework designed to organize electronic content across libraries, archives, and digital repositories. It relies on a hierarchical taxonomy complemented by cross-cutting facets to support subject-based search, resource management, and interoperability between systems.

The term combines the Finnish word luokitus (classification) with an electronic prefix, reflecting its roots in Finnish information-science and library communities. It emerged in the early 2010s as a collaborative effort by universities, national libraries, and research laboratories to improve metadata consistency and cross-system discoverability for growing digital collections.

The architecture comprises a top-level taxonomy of broad domains, subdivided into narrower classes, with an alphanumeric coding scheme. Each record carries one or more subject classifications, along with functional and technical facets such as resource type, access level, and format. Labels are provided in multiple languages, and the codes are designed to be stable across platform migrations. The system emphasizes machine readability with a formal ontology, often expressed in SKOS or RDF.

In practice, ECluokitus has been implemented in several national and institutional catalogs, serving as a basis for search, facet navigation, and metadata crosswalks. It includes mappings to established schemes such as DDC and LCC, facilitating interoperability with legacy systems. Updates are versioned to preserve historical mappings and enable gradual migration.

Critiques note that adoption is still limited outside participating institutions, and the framework requires governance to maintain mappings and vocabularies. The initial mapping effort can be resource-intensive, and evolving classifications may pose interoperability challenges if not carefully managed.
