These regulations cover a wide range of areas, most notably in the automotive sector, where they set international standards for vehicle safety, environmental protection, and technical specifications. The primary goal of ECEregelgeving is to harmonize technical requirements for vehicles and their components across different countries. This harmonization facilitates international trade by reducing technical barriers and promotes a higher level of safety and environmental performance globally.

When a vehicle manufacturer wishes to sell a product in multiple countries that adhere to ECEregelgeving, their products must comply with the relevant ECE regulations. Compliance is typically demonstrated through testing and certification by authorized bodies. Vehicles that meet these standards are often marked with an "E" inside a circle, followed by a number indicating the country that issued the approval. For example, an E1 mark signifies approval granted in Germany. Adherence to these regulations is crucial for market access and ensures that vehicles meet established international benchmarks for quality and safety.
