E17

E17 is an alphanumeric designation used in different contexts. The most widely recognized uses are European route E17, part of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) trans-European road network, and E17, the version number associated with the Enlightenment window manager for Unix-like operating systems.

European route E17 runs roughly from Antwerp, Belgium to Helsinki, Finland, and passes through the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. It is signposted along the route as E17 and, where bodies of water separate land segments, ferries are typically part of the corridor. The route serves as a major conduit for freight and passenger traffic across western and northern Europe and is maintained as part of the international E-road network.

Enlightenment E17 refers to the 0.17 release of the Enlightenment window manager, a free and open source desktop environment for Unix-like systems. E17 was notable for its modular, composited interface and emphasis on performance. Development continued into later releases, with the project transitioning to the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL). Although no longer the active focus, E17 represents a milestone in the evolution of Enlightenment and influenced subsequent designs.
