Dünenpflege refers to the methods and practices employed to maintain and protect sand dune ecosystems. These coastal landforms are dynamic and susceptible to erosion from wind and water. Effective dünenpflege aims to preserve their ecological functions, such as habitat provision for specialized flora and fauna, and their role as natural barriers against coastal flooding and storm surges.

Key aspects of dünenpflege include sand stabilization, typically achieved through planting native dune grasses like marram grass (Ammophila arenaria). These grasses have extensive root systems that bind the sand, reducing wind erosion and allowing dunes to accrete sand, thereby growing. Human intervention is often minimized to allow natural processes to shape the dunes, though sometimes controlled planting or the installation of simple brushwood fences is necessary.

Another important element is managing human access. Designated pathways, boardwalks, and fencing are used to direct foot traffic away from sensitive dune areas, preventing trampling of vegetation and sand compaction. Litter removal is also a common practice to maintain the aesthetic and ecological integrity of the dunes.

Dünenpflege also involves monitoring and adapting to environmental changes, such as rising sea levels and increased storm intensity.
