Dózistervezést, often translated as dose planning, is a crucial process in radiation therapy. It involves determining the optimal radiation dose distribution to treat a cancerous tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This complex task is performed by a multidisciplinary team of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and dosimetrists.

The process begins with imaging studies, such as CT scans, MRI, or PET scans, to precisely locate the tumor and delineate its boundaries. These images are then used to create a 3D model of the patient's anatomy. Based on the tumor's size, shape, and location, as well as the patient's overall health, a prescribed radiation dose is established.

Using specialized treatment planning software, the dosimetrist designs multiple radiation beams that will be directed at the tumor. The software allows for the manipulation of beam angles, shapes, and intensities to achieve the desired dose distribution. The goal is to deliver a high dose to the tumor and a low dose to critical organs in the vicinity.

Multiple treatment plans are often generated and evaluated by the radiation oncologist and medical physicist. They assess the plan's ability to cover the target volume adequately and spare critical structures. Once an optimal plan is approved, it is then transferred to the radiation therapy machine for treatment delivery. Dózistervezést is an iterative process, and plans may be adjusted during the course of treatment if the patient's anatomy or tumor response changes.
