Dómstólunum

Dómstólunum is an Icelandic term that translates to "the courts" or "the judiciary." It refers to the system of courts in Iceland responsible for administering justice. This system is composed of various levels of courts, each with its own jurisdiction and scope of authority. The primary function of dómstólunum is to interpret and apply Icelandic law, resolve disputes, and ensure that legal proceedings are conducted fairly and impartially.

The Icelandic judicial system is structured in a hierarchical manner. At the lowest level are the district courts, known as héraðsdómar. These courts handle a wide range of cases, including civil, criminal, and administrative matters. Appeals from decisions made in the district courts can be brought before higher courts. The next level of courts is the Court of Appeal, or Landsréttur, which was established relatively recently. This court reviews decisions of the district courts.

The highest court in Iceland is the Supreme Court, or Hæstiréttur. The Supreme Court hears appeals from the Court of Appeal and is the ultimate arbiter of legal matters in the country. Its decisions set precedents that guide lower courts. The independence of the judiciary is a cornerstone of the Icelandic legal system, ensuring that judges can make decisions free from external influence.
