Détachant

Détachant is a French term for a product intended to remove stains from fabrics, textiles, and other materials. In English-language references, it is generally translated as stain remover or stain-removal product. Détachants operate by introducing chemical agents that dissolve, suspend, or oxidize the compounds responsible for stains, enabling their removal during washing or cleaning.

Typical détachants come in several forms. Enzymatic stain removers use proteases, amylases, or other enzymes to break down protein- and starch-based stains. Oxygen-releasing bleaches and peroxides contribute whitening and stain-oxidation action, while solvent-based products dissolve oils and greases. Many formulations combine these mechanisms and are marketed for specific fabrics, such as delicate textiles or upholstery, or for pretreatment before laundering.

Usage guidelines emphasize testing on an inconspicuous area before applying to a visible stain. Apply the product to the stain, allow the prescribed dwell time, then launder or rinse as directed. Do not mix détachants with chlorine bleach or with other cleaners that may react dangerously. Some fabrics, including silk, wool, or leather, require specialized products, and the label should be followed carefully.
