DélAlföld

Délalföld is a geographical region in Hungary, also known as the Southern Great Plain. It is one of the seven macro-regions of Hungary, defined by the Statistical Law of 2013. This region encompasses the counties of Bács-Kiskun, Békés, Csongrád-Csanád, and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok.

The landscape of Délalföld is characterized by vast, flat expanses, typical of the Pannonian Basin. The region is predominantly agricultural, with fertile soils supporting extensive cultivation of grains, corn, and sunflowers. Major rivers like the Tisza and the Danube flow through or form the borders of Délalföld, playing a crucial role in its water management and historical development.

Historically, the area has been a crossroads of various cultures due to its strategic location. It has experienced periods of Ottoman occupation and Habsburg rule, which have left their mark on the architecture, traditions, and population. The cities within Délalföld, such as Szeged, Kecskemét, Békéscsaba, and Szolnok, serve as administrative, economic, and cultural centers. Szeged, in particular, is known for its vibrant university and its iconic Dóm tér.

The climate of Délalföld is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. The region is also known for its thermal waters, with several spa towns attracting visitors. Agriculture remains the backbone of its economy, but efforts are being made to diversify and develop tourism, especially ecotourism and cultural tourism, leveraging its natural beauty and historical heritage.
