Définie

Définie is the feminine singular form of the past participle of the verb définir (to define) and also the feminine form of the adjective défini. It is used to indicate that something has been defined, specified, or established by definition, or to describe a concept that is well characterized.

In grammar, définir is a transitive verb, and its past participle is défini, with the feminine form being définie. As an adjective, définie agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies: une règle définie, une valeur définie, des conditions définies. When used with the auxiliary être in passive or adjectival constructions, the participle agrees with the subject (par exemple, la solution est définie). In compound tenses with avoir, the participle can also agree with a preceding direct object, as in La règle que j’ai définie.

In mathematics and logic, défini and définie appear in phrases such as une fonction définie (a defined function) or un problème bien défini (a well-defined problem). The phrase bien définie is common to indicate clarity and precision: une question bien définie, une notion bien définie.
