Décrire

Décrire is a French verb meaning to describe: to give an account of the features, qualities, or events of someone or something; to portray or recount in words; and to outline or depict. The sense is primarily transitive, requiring a direct object: to describe a place, a person, a situation, a scene, or a concept. In broader use it can also mean to explain or render in detail what is perceived.

Usage notes: It is used with a direct object: décrire quelque chose; often followed by "en détail" or "avec précision". With "à" someone, it can mean to describe something to someone: décrire quelque chose à quelqu’un. The reflexive form "se décrire" appears in expressions like "se décrire en trois mots" (to describe oneself in three words). In mathematics or geometry, "décrire" can mean to trace or outline the shape of something, as in "la courbe décrit un cercle" (the curve describes a circle).

Etymology: from Latin describere, formed by de- and scribere (to write). The verb has the same root as the English "describe".
