Dysfagiapotilaiden refers to individuals experiencing dysphagia, a medical term for difficulty swallowing. This condition can affect any part of the swallowing process, from the mouth to the stomach. Dysphagia is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of an underlying medical issue. Causes can range from neurological disorders like stroke, Parkinson's disease, and ALS, to structural problems such as esophageal strictures or tumors, and even aging.

The symptoms of dysphagia vary depending on the severity and location of the problem. They may include choking or gagging when swallowing, pain during swallowing, a sensation of food getting stuck in the throat or chest, frequent heartburn, or unexpected weight loss. In severe cases, dysphagia can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia, a serious lung infection caused by food or liquid entering the airways.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and often specialized tests such as a barium swallow, FEES (fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing), or manometry. Treatment strategies are tailored to the individual's specific cause and severity of dysphagia. This may involve dietary modifications, such as changing food textures and liquid consistencies, swallowing exercises and therapy guided by speech-language pathologists, or, in some cases, medical or surgical interventions. The goal of treatment is to improve swallowing safety, maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, and enhance the patient's quality of life.
