Dykkercomputers, also known as dive computers, are electronic devices used by scuba divers to monitor and display crucial dive information. These devices are essential for safe diving practices, providing real-time data that helps divers manage their ascent and descent rates, monitor their remaining bottom time, and track their depth.

The primary function of a dykkercomputer is to calculate and display the no-decompression limit (NDL) or no-stop time. This is the maximum amount of time a diver can spend at a given depth without requiring mandatory decompression stops on ascent. The computer uses algorithms based on dive physiology and gas laws to continuously update the NDL as the diver's depth and time underwater change.

Beyond NDL, dykkercomputers typically display the current depth, maximum depth reached during the dive, dive time, and water temperature. Many models also include features like ascent rate alarms, which warn the diver if they are ascending too quickly, and decompression stop calculators that guide divers through mandatory decompression stops if they exceed their NDL. Some advanced computers can also monitor gas consumption for divers using multiple gas mixes, a feature known as a trimix or nitrox computer.

After a dive, dykkercomputers store dive profiles, allowing divers to review their past dives. This data can be uploaded to dive logs for personal record-keeping and analysis. The use of a dykkercomputer has largely replaced the older method of relying solely on dive tables and mechanical wristwatches, offering a more accurate and user-friendly way to manage dive safety.
