DutchPortuguese
DutchPortuguese refers to the historical and linguistic interactions between the Dutch and Portuguese peoples, particularly during the colonial era. From the 17th century onwards, the Dutch Republic emerged as a significant maritime power, challenging Portuguese dominance in global trade routes, especially in Asia. This competition led to numerous conflicts and the establishment of Dutch colonies in territories previously held by Portugal, such as parts of Brazil, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), and Indonesia.
The Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the Portuguese Empire were direct rivals in the spice trade.
