Dunaje

Dunaje, also known as the Danube in English, is a major European river and the continent’s second-longest, with a length of about 2,860 kilometers (1,778 miles). It rises in the Black Forest of Germany from the confluence of the Brigach and Breg near Donaueschingen and flows southeast across Central and Eastern Europe to the Black Sea.

The river flows through or along the borders of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, with its lower course reaching the Black Sea via the Danube Delta in Romania, where its waters extend into parts of Ukraine. Along its route it passes or nears several major cities, including Ulm, Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Novi Sad and Belgrade. The Danube’s drainage basin covers roughly 817,000 square kilometers and collects waters from multiple tributaries across its length.

International cooperation shapes its management. The Danube River Protection Convention governs environmental and water-management standards, coordinated by bodies such as the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR). The Danube is also a vital transport corridor, with extensive navigation rights and infrastructure supporting commerce, tourism and regional connectivity.

Culturally and ecologically, the Danube is significant. UNESCO-designated sites along the river include the Wachau cultural landscape in Austria and the Danube Delta in Romania. The river sustains diverse habitats and has shaped the history and economies of the Central and Southeast European regions through trade, migration and shared water resources.
