Driftsøkning

Driftsøkning, also known as drift hunting or drift fishing, is a specialized form of fly fishing that focuses on catching fish—particularly trout and salmon—by presenting flies to them as they drift downstream in the current. This technique is widely used in freshwater environments, such as rivers and streams, where fish rely on their natural instincts to detect prey carried by the water.

The core principle of driftsøkning involves mimicking the movement of natural insects or small fish that drift along the water’s surface or just beneath it. Anglers cast their flies upstream and allow the current to carry them downstream past waiting fish. The goal is to achieve a natural drift that closely resembles the movement of real prey, increasing the likelihood of a strike. Proper presentation is critical, as an unnatural drift can alert cautious fish and result in missed opportunities.
