The term is used in Dutch primarily in ball sports such as football (soccer) and basketball, and it also appears in coaching material for field hockey and other one‑on‑one situations. The goal of a dribbelcombinatie is to create space, open passing options, or scoring opportunities without losing possession.

Typical components include body feints that mislead an opponent about direction, leg moves such as step-overs or in-and-out dribbles, changes of pace (accelerations and decelerations), and shielding or protecting the ball to maintain control.
