Downcurrent

Downcurrent refers to a downward flow of water. This phenomenon can occur in various aquatic environments, including oceans, rivers, and lakes. In oceans, downcurrents are often associated with areas where surface water cools and becomes denser, causing it to sink, or where large volumes of water are forced downwards by tidal forces or geological features. Such oceanic downcurrents are a significant component of global ocean circulation, playing a role in the distribution of heat, nutrients, and dissolved gases.

In rivers, downcurrents can be observed in deeper channels or where water flows over submerged obstacles. These are typically a direct consequence of gravity pulling water downhill. In lakes, downcurrents can be induced by temperature differences, such as when surface water cools in winter and sinks, or by wind-driven circulation patterns that push surface water towards shorelines where it may then sink.
