Dostojanstvo

Dostojanstvo is a term used in several South Slavic languages, notably Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Slovenian, to denote the intrinsic worth of a person and the right to be treated with respect. Etymology traces to dostojan, meaning worthy, with the suffix -stvo forming a noun that expresses a state or condition.

In philosophy and ethics, dostojanstvo refers to the idea that every person possesses inherent worth by virtue of being human, independent of wealth, status, abilities, or other circumstances. This view supports protections against degrading treatment and coercion and underpins calls for respectful conduct in social relations.

In legal and political contexts, the concept is widely used as a foundation for human rights. Phrases such as ljudsko dostojanstvo or dostojanstvo čovjeka appear in constitutions and legal instruments, and the notion of human dignity is central to international documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which asserts that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

In everyday language, dostojanstvo also encompasses maintaining one’s own dignity and acting with self-respect, as well as respecting the dignity of others. It is invoked in discussions of justice, social policy, and ethics to condemn humiliation, exploitation, and oppression, and to advocate for fair treatment and humane standards across society.
