Dongarra

Jack J. Dongarra is an American computer scientist renowned for his work in numerical linear algebra and high-performance computing. He is a University Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a senior scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He directs the Innovative Computing Laboratory at UT.

Dongarra's contributions include the co-design and development of foundational numerical linear algebra software found in many scientific computing environments. He helped develop LINPACK and EISPACK, and was a principal designer of LAPACK, the widely used library for solving linear systems, eigenvalue problems, and singular value decompositions. He has also contributed to the Basic Linear Algebra Subprograms (BLAS) and related software that underpin modern HPC software stacks. His work has influenced benchmarking practices, most notably through LINPACK, which underpins the Top500 list of the world's fastest computers.

Dongarra has held leadership roles in the HPC community, guiding research in numerical algorithms and portable, scalable software for high-performance systems. He has received numerous honors recognizing his impact on computing.
