Cybersquatting, for example, involves registering a domain name that is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark with the intent to profit from its use or sell it to the trademark owner.

Resolving domain name disputes typically involves established legal frameworks and administrative processes. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) oversees the domain name system and has implemented policies like the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP). The UDRP provides a streamlined administrative procedure for resolving disputes concerning abusive registration of domain names, often referred to as "cybersquatting." Complainants in UDRP proceedings must demonstrate that the domain name is identical or confusingly similar to their trademark, that the registrant has no rights or legitimate interests in the domain name, and that the domain name has been registered and is being used in bad faith.

Decisions in UDRP proceedings can result in the transfer of the domain name to the complainant or its cancellation.
