Dolomitstein

Dolomitstein is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of the mineral dolomite. Dolomite itself is a carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaMg(CO3)2. This means it contains both calcium and magnesium in its crystal structure, distinguishing it from limestone, which is mainly calcium carbonate. Dolomitstein is often found interbedded with limestone or as a distinct geological formation.

The formation of Dolomitstein typically occurs through a process called dolomitization. This is a diagenetic process where magnesium ions in pore water replace some of the calcium ions in existing limestone. This can happen shortly after deposition of the original calcium carbonate sediment or much later, after the rock has been buried. The exact mechanisms and timing of dolomitization are subjects of ongoing geological research.

Dolomitstein is commonly pale to dark gray, brown, or reddish in color, depending on impurities present. It can have a crystalline or granular texture. Like limestone, it is susceptible to weathering and erosion, and can form characteristic karst landscapes in humid climates. Dolomitstein is an important building material, used in construction, as aggregate for concrete, and in the production of lime and magnesium. It is also a significant source of magnesium.
