Dolgellau

Dolgellau is a market town in Gwynedd, Wales, located in the historic county of Meirionnydd. It lies on the River Wnion at the edge of the Cadair Idris massif and serves as a gateway to the Cambrian Mountains. It was the county town of Meirionnydd until 1974.

Dolgellau developed as a market and trading center from the medieval period; many historic stone and timber-framed buildings survive in the central streets around the market square. The town has a long association with the wool and textile trades in the 18th–19th centuries.

In the present day, Dolgellau relies on tourism and local services, with visitors attracted by outdoor recreation and the surrounding landscape. The nearby Coed y Brenin Forest Park is a noted mountain biking venue, and Cadair Idris is a popular hiking destination. The town hosts markets and events and features local craft and food shops.

Dolgellau is part of Gwynedd Council, with a town council, and is within the historic county of Meirionnydd. It is accessible by road from surrounding towns; the town was formerly served by a railway, which closed in the 1960s. The nearest active rail links are in Machynlleth and Barmouth, with bus services connecting Dolgellau to the region.
