Dohányfüst

Dohányfüst is the smoke produced when tobacco is burned. It results from the combustion of tobacco leaves in products such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other devices, and carries a complex mixture of gases, vapors and fine particles released during burning.

Chemically, dohányfüst contains nicotine, tar (rich in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), carbon monoxide and a range of toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds such as formaldehyde, acrolein and benzene. Nicotine is the primary addictive component; concentrations vary with product type, smoking behavior and ventilation. Mainstream smoke is inhaled by the smoker, while sidestream smoke emanates from the burning product and often differs in composition.

Health effects: Direct exposure increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Secondhand smoke harms bystanders, including children and pregnant people; thirdhand smoke residues on surfaces can contribute to exposure after smoking ends.

Regulation and context: Many countries regulate dohányfüst exposure through indoor smoking bans, health warnings on packaging, advertising restrictions, and taxation. Public health measures aim to reduce initiation and exposure, with varying success across regions.

Environmental aspects: Tobacco smoke contributes to indoor and outdoor air pollution and can leave persistent residues on surfaces and textiles. Beyond health effects, the tobacco industry also contributes to litter and waste issues through discarded products and byproducts.
