Dixence

Dixence is a name used for a glaciated valley and a river system in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is most widely associated with the Grande Dixence Dam and the Grande Dixence Hydroelectric Project, one of the world’s largest and tallest gravity dam schemes. The project taps water from the Dixence watershed to generate electricity for the Swiss grid.

The Grande Dixence Dam is a concrete gravity dam built on the Dixence River. It was completed in 1961 and rises to about 285 meters in height, making it one of the tallest dams of its kind. The dam creates Lac des Dix, a reservoir that stores water for hydroelectric production. The storage and controlled release of this water underpin a network of power stations and tunnels that form the core of the Grande Dixence Project.

The Grande Dixence Hydroelectric Project comprises multiple stations and infrastructure along the Dixence valley and nearby basins. Water from the reservoir and tributary streams is diverted through a system of turbines to generate electricity, contributing a significant portion of Valais’ and Switzerland’s renewable energy supply. The project is noted for its engineering scale, its role in long-term water and energy management, and its placement within the alpine landscape.

Dixence remains primarily known for its hydroelectric facilities, though the surrounding area is also recognized for its high alpine scenery and outdoor recreation.
