Dithiolate

A dithiolate is an anionic ligand in coordination chemistry, characterized by the presence of two sulfur atoms as donor atoms. The general formula for a dithiolate ligand is [RS2]n-, where R represents an organic group and n is typically 1 or 2, indicating the charge of the ligand. Dithiolates are often derived from dithiol compounds by deprotonation. Common examples include ethylenedithiolate ([S2C2H2]2-) and benzenedithiolate ([S2C6H4]2-).

These ligands are versatile and can bind to metal centers in various coordination modes, most commonly in a chelating fashion where both sulfur atoms coordinate to the same metal ion, forming a stable ring structure. They can also act as bridging ligands, connecting two or more metal centers.
