Unlike centralized databases, no single party controls the ledger; trust arises from cryptographic proofs and network agreement.

DLT includes architectures such as blockchain, where data is organized into blocks, and non-blockchain designs like directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). Core components include nodes, digital signatures, cryptographic hashes, and smart contracts. Consensus mechanisms—Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, and fault-tolerant protocols—allow agreement on state without a central authority. Ledgers can be public or private, affecting who can read and write and how consensus is attained.

Use cases span finance, payments, supply chains, asset tokenization, identity, and governance. Benefits include transparency, traceability, and efficiency; risks include scalability, interoperability, regulatory uncertainty, governance, and energy use in some schemes.

Historically, Bitcoin and Ethereum popularized public blockchains, while enterprise platforms such as Hyperledger Fabric and R3 Corda pursued permissioned ledgers for business. The field evolves with research into interoperability, privacy, and scalable consensus. Distributed Ledger-Based systems are not a universal solution; their suitability depends on use case, governance, and compliance.
