Displacements

Displacement is a vector quantity that describes the change in position of an object. It is defined by the difference between the final position r2 and the initial position r1: Δr = r2 − r1. The displacement vector points from the starting location to the ending location, and its magnitude is the straight-line distance between those two points. It is independent of the path taken.

Displacement differs from distance traveled, which is a scalar that sums the length of the path. If motion occurs in one dimension, displacement reduces to the net change in position, and velocity is the displacement divided by time. In general, velocity is the rate of change of displacement with respect to time, and acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.

In engineering and physics, displacement is used to describe deflection or deformation of objects under loads. Structural displacement measures how far a point on a body moves from its original position, often vertical deflection under gravity or dynamic loads. The concept assumes a reference configuration, and large-displacement analysis may require nonlinear formulations.

In geoscience and Earth observation, surface displacement refers to ground movement due to earthquakes, magma movement, or tectonic processes. Techniques such as GPS and InSAR monitor displacement with high precision to assess hazards and deformation patterns.

In continuum mechanics, the displacement field u(x,t) assigns to every material point x its displacement from a reference configuration. The gradient of the displacement field relates to strain, while the divergence relates to volume change in certain contexts.
