Diskussioner (Swedish for "discussions") are communicative events in which participants exchange ideas, viewpoints, and information about a topic with the aim of understanding, evaluating, or deciding something.

The term derives from the Swedish noun diskussion, itself from Latin discussio, via French discussion; in practice it covers informal chats as well as structured, goal-oriented conversations.

Discussions occur in various contexts, including education, workplaces, politics, and media. They may be informal, such as everyday conversations, or formal, such as seminars, meetings, or public debates.

Common features of discussions include turn-taking, listening, asking questions, presenting arguments and evidence, and aiming for clarity about goals, assumptions, and conclusions.

Online discussions add asynchronous elements through forums, comment sections, or social platforms. They require moderation, clear rules, and attention to civility, fact-checking, and the management of misinformation.

Challenges include hardening attitudes, misinformation, misinterpretation, and domination by louder voices. Effective discussions emphasize purpose, mutual respect, summarization, inclusive language, and a focus on problem-solving rather than winning.

Diskussioner relate to deliberation and dialogue rather than debate alone. They can contribute to collective understanding and decision-making when participants share evidence, listen, and adjust positions.
