Discuto

Discuto is the first-person singular present indicative form of the Spanish verb discutir, meaning "I discuss" or "I debate." It is used to indicate that the speaker is currently discussing a topic or making a general statement about discussing.

Etymology: The verb comes from Latin discutere, formed from dis- "apart" and quatere "to shake." The sense developed from "to examine by shaking apart" to "to discuss" in modern Spanish. The related noun discusión denotes the act or instance of discussing.

Conjugation and usage: As a regular -ir verb, its present indicative forms are: yo discuto, tú discutes, él discute, nosotros discutimos, vosotros discutís, ellos discuten. It takes a direct object: "Yo discuto el tema con mi colega." In practice, discutir can imply neutral examination or a more heated exchange, depending on tone and context.

Notes: Discuto should not be confused with similarly spelled words in other languages. In Italian, the equivalent present first person is discutto, with a double t. In Portuguese, eu discuto also means "I discuss."
