Direktzündung

Direktzündung, also known as Coil-on-Plug (COP) ignition, is an automotive ignition system that dispenses with traditional spark plug wires. In a Direktzündung system, each spark plug has its own individual ignition coil mounted directly on top of it. This design eliminates the need for a distributor and high-tension leads, which were common in older ignition systems.

The primary advantage of Direktzündung is improved ignition performance. By placing the coil directly at the spark plug, the energy loss associated with long spark plug wires is minimized. This leads to a stronger spark, which can result in more complete combustion, better fuel economy, and reduced emissions. Furthermore, the absence of spark plug wires reduces potential sources of electrical interference and misfires caused by damaged or corroded wires.

Another benefit of Direktzündung is its contribution to engine packaging and serviceability. The integrated coil and spark plug design can lead to a more compact engine bay. It also simplifies maintenance, as individual coils can be easily diagnosed and replaced if they fail, without the need to replace an entire set of wires or a distributor.

The system typically consists of an engine control unit (ECU) that determines when to fire each spark plug. The ECU sends a signal to the ignition coil, which then generates the high voltage necessary to create a spark across the spark plug gap. While offering performance and convenience advantages, Direktzündung systems can sometimes be more expensive to manufacture and repair on a per-component basis compared to older, simpler ignition setups.
