Direct-to-Consumer (D2C or DTC) is a business model in which brands sell products directly to end customers, bypassing traditional wholesale and retail intermediaries. D2C companies typically use brand-owned websites, mobile apps, and owned retail stores, supplemented by select online marketplaces and pop-up shops. The model emphasizes direct interaction with customers, control over branding and pricing, and access to first-party data.

D2C emerged with the growth of e-commerce and digital marketing in the 2000s and 2010s, enabling brands to build relationships with customers without relying on distributors. Successful examples include brands in eyewear, grooming, beauty, apparel, and consumer electronics, which have leveraged digital channels to launch and scale without extensive retailer networks.

Key advantages include higher margins, faster product iteration, and better customer insights, since data from purchases and behavior can inform product development and marketing. Risks include higher customer-acquisition costs, the need for robust logistics and returns handling, inventory risk, and dependence on digital channels. Brands must invest in customer service, fulfillment, and compliance, while managing potential channel conflicts with existing retailers.

The approach is often complemented by omnichannel strategies, including physical showrooms or flagship stores, and selective partnerships with marketplaces to reach wider audiences. DTC remains a prominent strategy for brand-building, differentiated customer experiences, and data-driven growth, though profitability depends on efficient operations, scalable marketing, and sustainable customer lifetime value.
