Diploglottis

Diploglottis is a genus of trees in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae. The genus is native to northeastern Australia. There are two species currently recognized within Diploglottis, both of which are endemic to Queensland.

Diploglottis australis, commonly known as the native tamarind or Boonahwood, is a large rainforest tree reaching up to 30 meters in height. It is characterized by its compound leaves, which have many leaflets, and its distinctive bright orange, fleshy fruit. The fruit is edible and has a tangy, acidic flavor, often used in jams and desserts. This species is found in coastal rainforests from central Queensland south to New South Wales.

The second species, Diploglottis diphylla, is a smaller tree, typically growing to around 15 meters. It is also found in rainforest environments in Queensland. Its fruits are similar in appearance to those of D. australis but are generally less commonly utilized.

The name Diploglottis is derived from Greek, meaning "double tongue," likely referring to some characteristic of the flower or fruit. These trees play a role in the ecosystem, providing food for native fauna. They are also sometimes cultivated for their ornamental value and edible fruit.
