The primary application of diffraction gratings is in spectroscopy, where they are used to separate light into its spectrum. By directing light through or onto a grating, scientists can analyze the specific wavelengths present in a light source. This allows for the identification of elements and molecules, the study of celestial objects, and the measurement of various physical properties. Diffraction gratings can be transmission gratings, where light passes through slits, or reflection gratings, where light reflects off grooves. They are manufactured with varying line densities, measured in lines per millimeter, which determines their resolving power and the degree of spectral separation. Their precise and predictable behavior makes them indispensable tools in scientific research and various technological applications.
