The term is used to describe cross-dialect or cross-social variations of a base form, rather than a single, uniform meaning across all speakers. As a relatively new label, it appears chiefly in descriptive discussions of language change rather than in prescriptive grammars.

Mechanisms: Diferentseeruvad arises when a stem is adopted by separate speech communities that independently reanalyze its use. Semantic broadening in one dialect can accompany narrowing or shifting in another, often alongside phonological adjustments and the addition of dialect-specific affixes.
