The two fuel types have different properties and are processed differently by internal combustion engines. Diesel engines rely on compression ignition, where the fuel ignites due to the high temperature and pressure of compressed air. Gasoline engines, on the other hand, use spark plugs to ignite a mixture of fuel and air.

If gasoline is put into a diesel tank, the lower octane rating and different burning characteristics can lead to knocking or pinging sounds as the fuel doesn't ignite correctly under compression. This can damage pistons and valves. In a diesel engine, the lubricating properties of diesel fuel are also important for the fuel injection system. Gasoline lacks this lubricity, which can cause wear and tear on crucial components.

Conversely, putting diesel fuel into a gasoline car will likely result in the engine not starting or running very poorly. Diesel fuel is too "heavy" and has a higher flashpoint than gasoline, meaning it won't vaporize and ignite properly with a spark plug. The engine might sputter or stall shortly after starting.

The consequences of dieselöinti can range from relatively minor repairs, such as draining the fuel tank and replacing the fuel filter, to much more extensive and expensive engine overhauls, depending on how far the contaminated fuel has circulated and how long the engine was run. It is crucial for vehicle owners to be aware of the correct fuel type for their vehicle and to double-check before refueling.
