DieselelectricSysteme, or diesel-electric systems, refer to propulsion and power-generation arrangements in which a diesel internal combustion engine drives an electrical generator to supply electricity for electric motors or for feeding a electrical grid. They are used in various sectors, including rail transport, maritime propulsion, and stationary power generation.

The core elements of a diesel-electric system are the diesel engine, the electrical generator (alternator or generator set), and electric motors or traction devices. The diesel engine converts fuel into mechanical power, which drives the generator to produce electricity. The electrical energy is then converted back into mechanical energy by electric motors connected to the driven loads, such as locomotive axles or ship propellers. Control systems regulate engine speed, generator output, and motor torque to match operating requirements. In many installations, multiple generators and motors are arranged in a modular way to allow flexible power distribution and, in locomotives and ships, drive to multiple axles or propellers without a mechanical gearbox.

Applications include diesel-electric locomotives and multiple unit trains, ships ranging from merchant vessels to cruise ships, and rudimentary or large stationary power plants where a reliable, scalable source of electricity is required. The system also conceptually encompasses diesel-electric generation sets used for emergency power or remote electricity supply.

Advantages of diesel-electric systems include high starting torque, smooth operation, and flexible arrangement of equipment since the engine need not be mechanically connected to the driven load. They also enable easier distribution of power across multiple units. Limitations involve higher capital cost, more complex maintenance, and energy losses in converting mechanical energy to electrical energy and back.
