Didact is a term with two primary senses. In popular culture, Didact refers to a specific fictional character in the Halo video game series. The Didact, also known as Ur-Didact, is one of the most powerful Forerunners and a central antagonist in Halo 4. He is a military leader who aims to enforce the ancient Mantle of Responsibility and views humanity as a threat to Forerunner civilization. Awakening from cryptic confinement, he commands Forerunner fleets and the weapons system known as the Composer, which he intends to use to preserve life by converting it into digital form. His conflict with the Librarian and humanity drives major events in the game’s plot, culminating in a confrontation with Master Chief.

Beyond language and Halo lore, Didact occasionally appears in discussions of pedagogy as a stand-in for didactic approaches or instructional design, though this usage is rare. For most readers, the term’s primary meaning remains its historical link to teaching and instruction, with Halo’s Ur-Didact as the best-known contemporary proper noun bearing the form.
