Origin and usage: The word is a neologism formed from diaspora with the suffix -ens, intended as a plural or demonym in some languages. It is used to emphasize a collective sense of diasporic belonging beyond national origin, ethnicity, or religion.

Key characteristics: Diasporaens often maintain transnational networks that include kinship ties, remittances, cultural exchange, media consumption, and political engagement in both homeland and host societies. They may preserve language, religious practices, and memory of homeland while adapting to new contexts and creating hybrid identities.

Scope and examples: The concept is applicable to many populations described as diasporas, from long-standing communities to more recent migrant groups. It is intentionally broad to allow analysis of internal diversity and cross-border interactions, rather than homogenizing distinct communities.

Critiques: Some scholars argue that umbrella terms like diasporaens risk masking internal differences, power dynamics, and varying levels of agency. Others praise it for highlighting transnational ties and shared experiences across borders.
