For type 1 diabetes, which is characterized by the body's inability to produce insulin, insulin therapy is the primary treatment. Other classes of oral antidiabetic drugs include sulfonylureas, which stimulate insulin release; DPP-4 inhibitors, which enhance incretin hormones to increase insulin secretion and decrease glucagon levels; and SGLT2 inhibitors, which promote glucose excretion through the kidneys. Injectable non-insulin medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, are also available for type 2 diabetes management and help to improve glucose control and promote weight loss. Combination therapies, using multiple medications that work through different pathways, are often employed to achieve optimal glycemic control.
