Dessender

Dessender is a small municipality situated in the western part of the region of Valdés within the province of Calibre. The settlement was founded in the early 12th century, originally as a strategic waypoint on a trade route that connected the inland provinces with the coastal city of Sevilla. The town’s name is derived from the Latin word *deessere*, meaning “to descend,” a reference to its location at the foot of the surrounding hills.

The economy remains largely agrarian, with vineyards and olive groves constituting the bulk of local production. Over recent decades, the municipality has diversified modestly through the development of artisanal craft workshops and small-scale tourism, including guided tours of its 17th‑century parish church and annual harvest festival. The local council governs the town under a mayor-council system; the current mayor, elected in 2023, is Marta Solis of the Partid Democrático Regional.
