Deskompozitorë, commonly known as decomposers, are organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms and in doing so carry out the fundamental process of decomposition. They are essential components of all ecosystems, playing a vital role in nutrient cycling. Without decomposers, dead organic matter would accumulate, and essential nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus would remain locked away, unavailable for use by living plants and animals.

The primary groups of decomposers include bacteria and fungi. Bacteria are microscopic, single-celled organisms that are ubiquitous in soil, water, and air. They break down complex organic molecules into simpler inorganic substances through various metabolic processes. Fungi, such as mushrooms and molds, are also crucial decomposers, particularly adept at breaking down tough materials like lignin and cellulose found in dead plant matter. Other organisms, like certain invertebrates such as earthworms and millipedes, also contribute to decomposition by physically breaking down dead organic matter into smaller pieces, increasing the surface area available for microbial action.

The process of decomposition involves the release of energy and nutrients. As decomposers consume organic matter, they utilize its energy for their own survival and reproduction. Simultaneously, they convert complex organic compounds back into simpler inorganic nutrients, such as nitrates, phosphates, and carbon dioxide, which are then released into the environment. These released nutrients are then available to producers, such as plants, to be incorporated into new organic matter, thus completing the nutrient cycle. The rate of decomposition is influenced by factors such as temperature, moisture, and the availability of oxygen.
