Desinfetseerida

Desinfetseerida is a verb used in Estonian to describe the process of disinfecting: reducing or inactivating pathogenic microorganisms on surfaces, objects, liquids, or living tissue so that the risk of infection is minimized. The term covers actions aimed at achieving a safe microbial level, rather than achieving complete sterility.

In practice, desinfetseerida is applied in various settings. In healthcare, it refers to surface, instrument, and equipment disinfection using chemical agents or physical methods. In households and food preparation, everyday disinfection helps prevent illness by reducing microbial contamination on kitchen surfaces, utensils, and frequently touched objects. Water treatment and environmental sanitation also rely on disinfection methods to inactivate pathogens and make environments safer.

Common methods fall into chemical and physical categories. Chemical disinfectants include alcohols (ethanol, isopropanol), chlorine-based compounds, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, and quaternary ammonium compounds.
